Breaking Marriage Promise Under Nigerian Law
Under Nigerian law, a woman can take legal action against a man who made a genuine promise to marry her and later broke off the engagement.
The claim is known as “Breach of Promise to Marry” and is a civil action in which the claimant must provide evidence that a clear promise to marry was made and subsequently broken.
However, breaking off an engagement does not mean the court will force the man to marry the woman. Where the claim succeeds, the court may award monetary damages, depending on the circumstances and evidence presented.
