A 27-year-old woman in Queensland, Australia, has given birth to twins who have different biological parents in an extremely rare case.
The woman was acting as a surrogate for another couple and had an IVF embryo implanted. Around the same period, she also became naturally pregnant with her husband.
DNA tests later confirmed that the baby girl was biologically related to the couple whose embryo was implanted, while the baby boy was the biological child of the surrogate and her husband.
The twins were born by Caesarean section in November 2025.
The unusual case was recently reviewed by Queensland’s Children’s Court, which ruled that the babies were not legally considered “birth siblings” under the state’s surrogacy law.
