Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, will introduce new charges for businesses using the official WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026.
Under the new pricing system, Meta will charge businesses on a per-message basis for service messages and certain utility messages sent within the 24-hour customer service window.
Utility messages include payment confirmations, order updates and delivery notifications.
However, the change will not affect ordinary WhatsApp users or most small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app on their phones.
The charges mainly apply to businesses using the official WhatsApp Business Platform to manage customer conversations at scale.
Meta has also advised businesses and Solution Providers to add a payment method before September 30, 2026, warning that service messages could stop being delivered once the charges take effect if no payment method is available.
For Nigerian businesses, a chargeable service or utility message is expected to cost about $0.0101 (roughly ₦14) per message, based on an exchange rate of about ₦1,340 to $1.
