NFF Sacks Super Falcons Coach Justin Madugu and Technical Crew

August 17 ,2016 / Ibukun Emmanuel

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew to step down with immediate effect.

The decision comes after a disappointing 2026 campaign for the Super Falcons. Nigeria were knocked out of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the quarter-final stage after a 1–0 defeat to Cameroon — the team’s earliest-ever exit from the competition.

The defeat also denied Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The Super Falcons later faced South Africa in the African playoff but suffered a 2–1 defeat, ending their hopes of qualifying for the tournament.

The World Cup setback is historic, as Nigeria’s Super Falcons had appeared at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

The NFF announced the decision on Monday, August 17, 2026, but did not give a specific reason for the sack in its official statement. No replacement for Madugu or new technical crew has yet been announced.

Madugu had been part of the Super Falcons’ technical setup since 2021 and was appointed alongside Edwin Okon as part of efforts by the NFF to restructure the team’s coaching staff.

The NFF will now face the task of appointing a new technical team capable of rebuilding the Super Falcons and restoring the team’s position among Africa’s leading women’s football sides.
