Nigerian content creator Peller has joined the growing conversation surrounding the viral video of a young lady who addressed billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu by his first name.
The lady reportedly greeted the prominent businessman with, “Good morning, Tony,” a moment that quickly attracted widespread reactions on social media.
Reacting to the incident, Peller questioned what he described as a double standard in how Nigerians judge people based on their social and financial status.
He argued that if someone from an ordinary background had addressed Elumelu in the same manner, people would likely have immediately blamed the person’s behaviour on a lack of education.
Peller stressed that the lady is a graduate, yet the incident still happened, suggesting that education does not automatically determine how a person understands social etiquette or hierarchy.
He also pointed to the age difference between the lady and Elumelu, arguing that, beyond wealth and status, respect for an older person should have influenced the way she addressed him.
His remarks have generated further debate online, with social media users discussing whether addressing an older or highly respected personality by their first name should be considered disrespectful or simply a matter of personal communication style.
The viral incident has continued to attract attention, with different Nigerians offering contrasting opinions on respect, upbringing, education and social class.
