Why Gulder Ultimate Search Went Off Air

Gulder Ultimate Search (GUS), one of Nigeria’s most popular adventure reality TV shows, went off air after its 2014 season following 11 successful editions.

The show, which debuted in 2004, became known for its survival challenges, treasure hunts, physical tasks and mental tests, with contestants battling nature and one another for the ultimate prize.

One of the major factors behind the programme’s long break was the high cost involved in producing the large-scale reality show. The production required extensive logistics, challenging locations, safety arrangements and substantial prizes.

Safety also became a major concern following the death of contestant Anthony Ogadje, who drowned during a challenge in 2007.

Despite its absence, GUS continued to enjoy a strong fan base, with Nigerians repeatedly calling for its return.

The show eventually returned in 2021, seven years after it went off air, with the theme “The Age of Craftsmanship.” The comeback season featured 18 contestants and ended with Odudu Ime Otu emerging as the winner.

However, the 2021 edition remains the latest season listed for the show, leaving many fans wondering whether Nigeria’s iconic adventure reality show will ever return to television.
