Lagos Declares Thursday Work-Free As Over 3 Million Expected For 2026 Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day

The Lagos State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day to enable residents and visitors participate in activities marking the 2026 Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day celebration.

The declaration covers public servants, political appointees and government offices across the state, allowing residents to fully participate in the cultural and spiritual activities planned for the day.

More than three million traditional worshippers and residents are expected to take part in the celebration, which organisers describe as potentially one of the largest gatherings of traditional worshippers in the world.

Lagos State Commissioner/Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, described Ìṣẹ̀ṣe as more than a public holiday, stressing that it represents Yoruba spirituality, culture and indigenous identity.

According to him, Yoruba heritage has a significant global presence, with Yoruba communities and Ìṣẹ̀ṣe-related traditions maintained in places such as Cuba, Brazil and the Caribbean.

The celebration is the culmination of a week-long programme of traditional activities, featuring cultural and spiritual observances aimed at promoting and preserving indigenous heritage.

Lagos has observed August 20 as a work-free day for Ìṣẹ̀ṣe since 2023, following a request from the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has continued the practice as part of the state’s emphasis on cultural heritage and religious inclusiveness.

The state government has encouraged residents and visitors to embrace the celebration peacefully while showcasing the richness of Yoruba culture and traditions.
