The Ogun State Government has officially declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a public holiday to enable residents to celebrate Isese Day, an annual observance dedicated to Yoruba culture, traditional religion, heritage and indigenous values.
The declaration means workers and residents across the state are expected to enjoy a work-free day as communities and adherents of the Yoruba traditional faith mark the occasion through various cultural and traditional activities.
The state government said the celebration is an important opportunity to preserve and promote Yoruba cultural heritage while recognising the role of indigenous traditions in strengthening community bonds and fostering a sense of identity.
Isese Day is traditionally associated with the appreciation of Yoruba deities, ancestors, indigenous customs, traditional knowledge and cultural practices. For adherents, the day may involve prayers, rites, rituals, cultural gatherings and other observances.
Beyond its religious significance, the government noted that the celebration provides an avenue for people to appreciate Yoruba history, language, customs, arts and traditional values, while encouraging peaceful coexistence among residents of different faiths.
The government has therefore urged residents to mark the occasion peacefully and responsibly, stressing the importance of respecting the rights and beliefs of people who may observe the day differently.
The August 20 holiday has been recognised in Ogun State since 2023, following the approval of the state legislature.
The 2026 declaration therefore continues the state’s annual recognition of Isese Day as a public holiday.
