Tinubu to Adeleke: You Won the Election, Don’t Stigmatise Your Opponents

President Bola Tinubu has urged Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to use his victory in the August 15 governorship election to promote reconciliation, unity and stability rather than target his political opponents.

Tinubu gave the advice on Thursday when Adeleke visited the State House in Abuja to thank him for what the governor described as the President’s role in ensuring a free and fair election. Adeleke also presented his Certificate of Return to Tinubu.

The President reminded Adeleke that winning an election was not the same as defeating or conquering his opponents.

«“You did not conquer anybody. You won the election. That is the essence of democracy.”»

Tinubu urged the governor to make reconciliation a major focus of his second term and warned him against stigmatising or victimising political opponents.

He also encouraged Adeleke to govern for all residents of Osun State, regardless of their political affiliations, and to focus on infrastructure, education, healthcare and the welfare of vulnerable families.

Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. The governor won in 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.

Tinubu described Adeleke as being in a unique position to promote peace, stability, democracy and the rule of law in Osun.

Meanwhile, the APC has rejected the election outcome and said it would not hurriedly congratulate Adeleke, maintaining that its candidate did not receive the highest number of valid votes.
