Canada admitted 182,100 new permanent residents between January and June 2026, reaching 40.8 per cent of its effective annual target of 446,000, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data reported by CIC News.
The figure includes 155,800 permanent residents admitted under Canada’s regular immigration programme, alongside admissions through two special initiatives for protected persons and in-Canada workers.
Canada’s regular 2026 permanent resident target is 380,000, meaning the country would have needed about 190,000 admissions by mid-year to remain on pace.
The economic immigration category recorded 89,200 admissions by June 30, against a full-year target of 239,800, while the family category performed ahead of its mid-year pace with 45,100 admissions.
The figures indicate that Canada is currently behind the pace required to meet its 2026 immigration target, putting pressure on the country to increase admissions during the second half of the year.
