A 23-year-old man in Omaha, Nebraska, United States, has been sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison after being convicted of an armed bank robbery that prosecutors said he planned with the help of ChatGPT.
The man, identified as Deron Lewis-Payne, robbed an i3 Bank branch in West Omaha in February, making away with about $9,175 after allegedly threatening bank employees with a handgun.
Investigators later searched his phone and reportedly discovered conversations with ChatGPT relating to the planned robbery, including questions about police response times, firearms and ammunition.
Surveillance footage, the getaway vehicle, recovered cash and clothing also helped investigators link Lewis-Payne to the robbery. Only about $2,397 of the stolen money was recovered, according to reports.
Lewis-Payne was sentenced to 121 months — approximately 10 years and one month — in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
The case has drawn attention to the growing debate over the misuse of artificial intelligence tools to facilitate criminal activities.
