A doctor has provided clarification on palliative care following concerns raised by the daughters of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, about their father’s access to further medical treatment.
The issue reportedly came to public attention after Ogogo’s daughters expressed concern that hospitals had refused to continue treating the actor and that his family was seeking other options for his care.
The doctor explained that palliative care is not simply a decision to stop caring for a patient. It is a specialised approach aimed at improving the quality of life of people living with serious illnesses by managing pain, discomfort and other symptoms, while also providing emotional and psychological support to patients and their families.
The clarification is particularly important because palliative care is sometimes misunderstood as meaning that a patient has been abandoned or that doctors have completely given up on treatment. In reality, palliative care can, depending on the circumstances, be provided alongside other appropriate medical treatment.
Ogogo has previously spoken publicly about his own long battle with illness. In 2025, he revealed that he endured a severe health challenge for about seven years, during which he struggled to eat and could only take pap for an extended period.
The veteran actor has also previously recounted how his illness affected his career and family, including a period when he sought treatment from different places before eventually recovering.
The latest development has generated concern among fans and well-wishers, with many hoping that Ogogo receives the appropriate medical attention and support required for his condition.
The family’s concerns also highlight the importance of clear communication between healthcare professionals and relatives when dealing with serious or complicated medical conditions.
