The Lagos State Government has explained that the replacement of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses destroyed during the 2020 #EndSARS unrest has been delayed by the sharp increase in the cost of acquiring new buses.
The government reportedly said a BRT bus that previously cost about ₦80 million now costs approximately ₦280 million, making the replacement programme significantly more expensive.
Several BRT buses were destroyed during the 2020 unrest. At the time, the Lagos State Government said about 84 BRT vehicles had been damaged, with the total loss estimated at roughly ₦3.9 billion.
The huge rise in the cost of buses has therefore complicated efforts to restore the fleet to its pre-#EndSARS capacity.
The BRT system remains a major component of Lagos’ public transportation network, serving commuters across several major routes in the state.
