Zimbabwean Mother Reunites With Daughter 13 Years After She Disappeared From Crèche

A Zimbabwean mother, Georgina Muchekadzose, has been reunited with her daughter, Tariro Mahumba, 13 years after the girl disappeared from a crèche in Mutare at the age of five.

Tariro reportedly went missing in 2013 from a church-run crèche in Sakubva’s OTS area of Mutare. Her mother had left her at the facility before going into the city to work, but returned to discover that the child had disappeared. The case was reported to police, but no breakthrough was made for years.

Now 18, Tariro was reportedly found alive in Mozambique after a social media appeal helped reveal her whereabouts. She was able to make contact with people who eventually connected her with her family in Zimbabwe.

Muchekadzose said she immediately recognised her daughter during a video call, while Tariro also remembered her mother and brother despite the many years apart.

The emotional reunion, however, is not yet complete physically, as formal procedures are reportedly being handled by Mozambican authorities before Tariro can return home to Zimbabwe.

The case has renewed attention on child abduction and cross-border trafficking, while the family continues efforts to bring Tariro home.
